We are proud to make exceptional charcoal.

Our Exeter Retort reuses the waste gases, so it is less polluting than more traditional methods of making charcoal. It also means we can be mobile – taking the retort to other locations if that’s most appropriate.
We carefully select and season our wood on site, and we always label our bags with which wood had been used. Birch is our most popular but we also use sycamore, alder – any native hard wood.

The care we take shows in the quality of our product.
Don’t take our word for it though, this is what our customers have to say:
“I have used Blackbird Charcoal now for a number of years. I started to use their service as I wanted to support local businesses and the idea of locally sourced products resonated with community vibes. Well I was honestly blown away at the quality of the charcoal, the prompt reliable and friendly service that was provided. I have recommended to numerous friends and family alike and I would definitely recommend giving their charcoal a try! You won’t be disappointed with the ease to light and the longevity of the heat provided for cooking with!”

“Blackbird Charcoal has easily beaten other brands. The lump burns nicely, I get great heat for grilling and it burns nicely when doing a lo and slow. The sustainability aspect is great too.”

“I started seriously BBQing about 8–9 years ago and, over time, I’ve tried just about every type of charcoal on the market. I was always on the lookout for something that was not only high-quality but also locally made and sustainably produced. That’s when I came across Blackbird Charcoal—and honestly, I’ve never looked back. The quality of the charcoal is second to none: it burns hot, clean, and consistently, which is exactly what you want whether you’re doing low-and-slow or firing up for a sear. As a BBQ enthusiast, I appreciate not just the product but the company behind it—Blackbird have always been a pleasure to deal with. Even now, despite the fact they’ve moved on to pastures new, I’ll still be ordering by the pallet. For me, it’s excellent value for money, and more importantly, it’s a product I trust every time I fire up the smoker or grill.”
